Quatuor Cobalt

Founded in Montreal in 2017, the Cobalt Quartet now occupies a unique place on the  Canadian music scene thanks to the consistency of its artistic vision and the scope of its

projects. The ensemble is particularly noted for its interpretation of the Romantic repertoire  on period instruments. In 2026, the quartet was invited to Paris as part of the Générations France Musique programme, broadcast live on Radio France, marking a significant  milestone in its international reach. That same year, Cobalt released a second album on the  ATMA Classique label and embarked on a European tour of several iconic venues, including  the Salle Gaveau in Paris.

In 2025, the Cobalt Quartet released its first album, Reflets du temps, celebrating three  female composers who left their mark on their era, on the GFN Classics label. In less than a  year, the recording surpassed one million streams on streaming platforms and received a  remarkable reception in both Canada and Europe. To mark the bicentenary of Franz  Schubert’s death, the Cobalt Quartet will present, from 2024 to 2028, a complete cycle of  the composer’s string quartets on period instruments, in collaboration with the Chapelle  musicale du Bon-Pasteur. On the international stage, the quartet has been selected for the  prestigious 2025 International Joseph Joachim Competition.

Regularly invited to perform by the country’s leading musical institutions, the Cobalt  Quartet has appeared at the Festival International de Lanaudière, the Festival International  du Domaine Forget, the Salle Bourgie, the Place des Arts, the Palais Montcalm and the  Chapelle musicale du Bon-Pasteur. The Quartet also presented its album Reflets du temps  during a tour of France, and has performed at various festivals in France such as the  Quatuor Debussy’s Cordes en Ballade, and Musique en Bourbonnais.

Committed to passing on their art, the Cobalt Quartet has been teaching chamber music at  the CAMMAC Music Centre since 2022. Previously, Cobalt was the resident quartet at the  Académie internationale du Domaine Forget for four years and ensemble-in-residence at  the Université de Montréal. The ensemble is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts,  the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, the Ministère de la Culture et des  Communications du Québec, the Conseil des arts de Montréal, Jeunesses Musicales of  Canada and the Père-Lindsay Foundation.

The 1866 Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume violin and the Arthur Copley bow (W.E. Hill & Sons) 1955  by Guillaume Villeneuve, the Antonio Gragnani violin (1751) and the Victor Fétique bow (c.  1925) belonging to Diane Bayard, as well as the Pietro Antonio Cateni cello (c. 1790–1810)  and the Gustav Prager bow belonging to François Leclerc, have been generously loaned by  Canimex (Drummondville).
