Biography
ENSEMBLE ARTCHORAL
The Ensemble ArtChoral, a professional choir in the great tradition of choral singing in Quebec, has been in existence for over 40 years, with the mission of presenting professional choral singing in Quebec, Canada and internationally. ArtChoral, winner of the Prix Opus for Musical Event of the Year in 2020, has chosen La Maison symphonique as the home for its concert series in Montreal. In addition, this professional choir will be in residence from 2023 to 2027 at the Classica Festival and the Nouvel Opéra Métropolitain. With numerous tours of Canada and Quebec, ArtChoral has brought exceptional choral music to cities and communities in all 10 Canadian provinces. ArtChoral’s annual tour of Handel’s Messiah has become an essential part of Quebec’s cultural life. The choir’s artistic director, Matthias Maute, winner of two JUNO Awards, has earned an international reputation for his work as artistic director of Ensemble Caprice and the Bach Society of Minnesota, as well as co-artistic director of the Montreal Baroque Festival.
MATTHIAS MAUTE
Matthias Maute has established a solid national and international reputation as a conductor, choral conductor and composer, and as one of the finest performers of his generation on both recorder and flute. In recent years, Mr Maute has devoted much of his time to conducting choirs and orchestras, notably with Ensemble Caprice (which he co-founded with his wife, Sophie Larivière). Matthias’ compositions occupy an important place in the world of contemporary recorder music, and his discography includes more than twenty remarkable recordings. He also teaches at the Université de Montréal and McGill University in Montreal. Matthias Maute, who won a Juno Award for his recording with choir of Vivaldi and his Angels, has earned an enviable reputation for the excellence of his work as artistic director of Ensemble Caprice, the Bach Society of Minnesota in the United States, and the Noncerto Concerts series, as well as co-artistic director of the Montreal Baroque Festival.
