Biography

Maria Gajraj is a Montréal-based organist and doctoral candidate at McGill University. Her research explores 20th-century Caribbean organ repertoire. She has performed internationally at venues such as Blackburn Cathedral (UK), Maison Symphonique (Montréal), and First Church in Cambridge (Harvard University), as well as in concert series including Cal Performances and Bergen Orgelsommer.

Her debut album, exhale., released in May 2025, has been featured on CBC Radio. A recipient of the Godfrey Hewitt Scholarship (2022) and First Prize Winner of the RCCO Canadian National Organ Competition (2025), her doctoral work is supported by the Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ).

Maria is passionate about showcasing women and composers of colour in her concert programs. As Deirdre Piper wrote in Pipelines, Maria’s “spirited, clean, and colourful performance lent real meaningful significance” to this music. Through engaging programming and by presenting the organ in innovative, multidisciplinary contexts, she strives to challenge stereotypes and make the instrument more accessible to all.
