Biography
Elisabeth St-Gelais is currently studying for a Master of Music – Voice and Opera at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University in Montreal. An Innu from the Pessamit Band, she has been studying classical singing and the art of opera since 2014 and has been perfecting her skills with her teacher Aline Kutan since 2017. A three-time scholarship recipient from McGill University, Elisabeth performed in Ontario in 2022 as part of Barbara Assiginaak’s Native Opera production. She also made her European debut in Germany in the summer of 2022 at the Berlin Opera Academy as Rosalinde in Johann Strauss II’s celebrated operetta, Die Fledermaus. Elisabeth will perform in Quebec and Ontario during the 2022-2023 season at the invitation of the Canadian Opera Company and the Orchestre symphonique du Saguenay Lac-St-Jean. Since 2022, the soprano has received several honours. She was the grand prize winner of the prestigious Wirth Vocal Prize at McGill University last March, when she won the grand prize of $25,000. She also won the Grand Prize 19-30 at the Canimex Canadian Music Competition last June. Finally, she was named to the prestigious #CBC30under30 2022 list where she stood out as a prominent Aboriginal opera artist under the age of 30. She will perform the role of Eurydice in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Eurydice with Opera McGill in March 2023.
